A gold breastpin used to pin ceremonial clothing on the breast. Initially it was decorated with sixty nine precious stones and pearls, of which forty seven were preserved, including four pearls.
The breastpin constituted a part of so-called Środa treasure discovered in 1988 in Środa Ślaska at 14 Daszyńskiego Street. The treasure – which was certainly a pledge for a significant cash loan which King of Bohemia Charles IV passed into the hands of a Jew from Środa called Muszko (Moses) – consisted of a gold female crown, two pairs of gold pendants, two rings, a signet, fragments of a gold tape and 3924 silver and 390 gold coins.
The breastpin – which is the most magnificent and one of few products of Medieval goldsmithing preserved until today – was made at the end of the first half or in the second half of the 13th century, while the cameo was made about 1240.
