A lion’s head covered with representation of wavy hair clusters creating the mane most probably constituted a part of framings of one of the door openings, and after demolition of the Abbey of St. Vincent in Ołbin in 1529 it was embedded in a wall of a townhouse at 5 Garbary Street.
Ołbin Abbey was the largest Romanesque monastery complex in Poland. It was funded by Piotr Włostowic for the Benedictines and it constituted a part of an early urban settlement from the 12th century together with the castle in Ostrów Tumski and a craft and trade settlement located on the left bank of the Oder. At the end of the 12th century the abbey was passed to the Premonstratensians. The preserved architectural details indicate that during its construction the best craftsmen from the regions of southern France, lower Rhine and Thuringia were involved.
