The polyptych commissioned from the workshop of Hans Pleydenwurff and fitted at the main altar of the Church of Saint Elizabeth in Wrocław in 1462 greatly influenced the local artistic community. Selected scenes from the altar were copied by Silesian artists creating epitaphs and altars for local sponsors. Patricians in Legnica were envious of Wrocław’s Nuremberg masterpiece, so they commissioned a painted and sculptured polyptych to be made in the style of Pleydenwurff’s work.
