After the Lutherans took control of the Wrocław Church of Saint Elizabeth in 1525, the iconographic programmes for the epitaphs funded and the function they served were changed. The images of saints were removed from paintings, which mainly depicted scenes from the Old and the New Testament; while the monuments served only a commemorative function, as the Protestants rejected the Purgatory dogma. To commemorate an excellent doctor who served three emperors, this alabaster monument was erected, which is now considered one of the greatest pieces of Silesian Mannerism.
