The official papal document appointing Silesian duchess Hedwig to be one of the saints of the Church, worshiping her as a brave woman, who did not let herself lose heart in adversities. As proof of these words in the document not only regulations regarding the liturgical cult related to the saint were included but also her curriculum vitae, preceding her first biographies and descriptions of selected events considered to be miracles taken place through her intercession.
The addressee of the document dated 26 March 1267 is Polish episcopate with the Metropolitan Bishop of Gniezno, which indicates this church circle to be the initiator of the efforts regarding canonization and development of St. Hedwig’s cult.
The original of the bull was passed to the monastery in Trzebnica thanks to the efforts of the abbess Gertrude, daughter of St. Hedwig. After the dissolution of the monastery in 1810, during the national secularization process in the Kingdom of Prussia, the document was placed in the National Archive in Wrocław, where it has remained until now.
