In Spitsbergen the peak towering over the Bratteggdalen valley is called Jahnfjellet, and the mountain pass is called Jahnskardet. Explorers jokingly call it “Jahn’s pants” - theycan be seen from the polar station of Wrocław, established by Professor Alfred Jahn in 1957, which today is a significant institution of international research of Antarctica. The name of Jahn was well-known among researches like the name of Amundsen, Arctowski or Siedlecki. He was a participant of a pioneer Polish expedition to Greenland in 1937. In the times of communism he initiated and organized Polish polar expeditions and set their research directions. He was an initiator and the first president of the Polish Polar Club. He also played managing roles in the International Geographical Union.
