The interiors and elevations of the Wrocław Church of Saint Elizabeth were full of painted and sculptured epitaphs. Before reformation, the works served to commemorate the memory of the dead and were supposed to inspire the public to pray for the souls held in the Purgatory. A characteristic feature of such Silesian works was the introduction of a large number of saints praying for the deceased. The presence of Saint Sebald – the patron of Nuremberg – in Hölczel’s epitaph indicates the origin of the deceased.
